Marathon’s cold tack sprayers are capable of spraying water based emulsions that do not require heat, such as RS-1 or SS-1. Multiple sizes available including a portable unit without a material tank to pump material directly from a drum.

Above is an example of a small test patch of pavement that had dipped from a transport truck tire. Once all six infrared tubes were switched on (360,000 BTU), the asphalt was almost to original mixing temperature within 3-4 minutes and ready to be raked and tampered. (*heat up time may vary depending on ambient temperatures).

OIL-JACKETED FEATURES
Our equipment has a reputation for outlasting the competition! Oil jacketed
units have a longer
lifespan in comparison to air jacketed versions as the oil absorbs the heat
generated by the
burner and the flame no longer acts as the heat source for the asphalt,
saving the lifespan of
the steel.
Oil jacketed units produce even heat distribution throughout the whole
hopper so that asphalt
doesn’t burn or soften unevenly throughout. Our design has superior heat
retention and comes
standard with automatic temperature control to consistently maintain the
quality of your product
and eliminate the need for frequent burner on/off control.
Oil jacketed models feature a 120V overnight heater to keep asphalt warm
overnight to minimize
heat up time the next day.
HYDRAULIC DUMP FEATURES
42° hydraulic dumping angle plus the 10° provided by the floor
guarantees maximum material output. Dual safety lock-out bars will
support vat at 20° for maintenance.
Hydraulic scissor hoist for superior stability when dumping asphalt.
Fully enclosed hydraulic powerpack with a single magnetic & detachable
operator pendant to allow hopper control from desired location.
Alarm sounds whenever tilt system is operated downwards for operator
safety.

TACK COAT MATERIALS
The main purposes of tack coating is to promote the bond between new and old
pavement layers. Proper application is critical for success in pavements. The better
you understand the materials, the better they can be used for their intended
purpose.
There are many types of tack coat emulsions. The most common options are:
Slow Setting Emulsions – Designed for mixing stability, this type of emulsion is used with fine aggregates as the surface area is large and requires time for uniform mixing.
- SS-1 – Slow Setting Emulsion, low viscosity, stored at cooler temperatures
- SS-1h – Slow Setting Emulsion, low viscosity, stored at cooler temperatures, hard penetration
Rapid Setting Emulsions – Designed to react quickly with aggregate, the emulsion breaks down rapidly as it comes with contact with aggregate helping in fast setting and rapid curing. Rapid setting type of emulsion are typically used in surface of roads.
- RS-1 – Rapid Setting Emulsion, low viscosity, stored at cooler temperatures
- RS-1h – Rapid Setting Emulsion, low viscosity, stored at cooler temperatures, hard penetration

CUTBACK EMULSIONS
The most popular types of cutback bitumen are well known as Rapid Curing (RC), Medium Curing (MC) and Slow Curing (SC). Rapid Curing cutback is designed to react quickly and are primarily used in spray applications such as bond/tack coats, aggregate chips seals, granular priming and similar surface treatments. Medium Curing cutback is designed to be mixed with aggregates because it does not break immediately upon contact with aggregate, and can remain workable for extended periods of time. Slow Curing cutback are used primarily in road-mixing and dust suppressant applications.
SUITABLE MATERIALS
This unit is suitable to melt hot poured rubberized asphalt joint sealants that must be heated using indirect heating methods, either a double boiler or hot oil circulating kettle. (always check with your local material supplier for safe heating and application temperatures).
